“Every child in Boston should have a Red Sox hat,” said Red Sox President Sam Kennedy. “That was the simple thought behind this donation, and there is no better time than a week before Opening Day to get them to these deserving kids as we eagerly await the return of baseball. With our partners at JetBlue, we have been able to provide caps to tens of thousands of children throughout the city, giving them a way to connect with the team as we start the 2017 season.”
The hat distribution was launched earlier today when Red Sox President Sam Kennedy, Red Sox Foundation Board Member Linda Henry, JetBlue Executive Vice President Martin St. George, and Boston Public Schools Superintendent Tommy Chang joined Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh at the West Zone Early Learning Center and Hennigan K-8 School in Jamaica Plain. The group handed out hats to students and surprised kids with a visit from Wally the Green Monster and his sister Tessie.
“Baseball is a Boston tradition, and I’m happy to join the Red Sox and JetBlue as we bring Red Sox caps to Boston Public Schools,” said Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh. “Thanks to our partners, thousands of young fans will be able to bring home a piece of the Red Sox and share in the excitement of Opening Day.”
A total of 42,535 hats were delivered to students and teachers at all Kindergarten through 8th grade Boston Public Schools. The city-wide hat donation is part of a commitment by the Red Sox and JetBlue to engage with the Boston community each year for the duration of their partnership through 2030.
"We are grateful to Mayor Walsh, the Red Sox and JetBlue for bringing smiles to so many students' faces today at the West Zone Early Learning Center and Hennigan K-8 School, as well as throughout the district,” BPS Superintendent Tommy Chang said. “The students love their Red Sox hats, but most importantly they value knowing that we have great community partners who care so much about them and are on their team."
“JetBlue is proud to partner with the Red Sox and Boston Public Schools on this incredible celebration of Opening Day,” said Marty St. George, Executive Vice President, Commercial and Planning, JetBlue. “With our continued growth in Boston, we are always looking for opportunities to support the community and after confirming our commitment to the team through 2030, what a better way to support the Boston fans than by distributing 43,000 hats to kids throughout Red Sox Nation.”
